General Standards
The Indonesian administration has been very active in developing standards for goods and services which are domestically manufactured, as well as for imported and exported products. It should be mentioned that standards are currently used in most Indonesian industries.
Standards Organizations
The Badan Nasional Standardisasi (BSN) is the main standardization agency of Indonesia, whose mission is to develop and organize standardization activities within the country. BSN responsibilities include:
- formulation and implementation of specific policies regarding national standardisation
- establishment of accreditation/certification bodies
- determination of the Indonesian National Standard
Conformity Assessment
The Indonesian government defines its national standards in accordance with regional and international standards in order to successfully compete in the global market. Thus, to ensure that products comply with the established standards, a conformity assessment mechanism is required.
Product Certification and Accreditation
Product certification is required in Indonesia; standards are formulated in compliance with the nationally agreed mechanism of standard formulation and aligned with similar regional or international standards.
The National Accreditation Committee (KAN) is responsible for the accreditation of the products in Indonesia. Its main function is to establish a national accreditation system and to grant accreditation in certain fields including testing and calibration laboratories, certification bodies and inspection bodies.
All meat products require a halal certificate. Imported medicines require a certificate of analysis from the manufacturer; free medicines for distribution also require brochures in Indonesian.
Living plants, seeds, fruit and vegetables, as well as other similar goods, require a phytosanitary certificate issued by the appropriate authority in the country of origin stating that they are free from pests or diseases.
Labelling requirements
The use of labels in Indonesian is obligatory for all types of products, except for cases when there are no Indonesian words with a similar meaning.
Food products must contain the following details on the label:
- indicate that the product has been registered with and has a product number (ML number) supplied by the Food and Drug Control Agency
- expiration date
- complete name and address of the importer

Food colouring agents are subject to specific labelling regulations.
