Standards organizations
The Gambia Standards Bureau (TGSB) is the main national standardization body. TGSB's primary function is to standardize methods and processes, as well as imported and locally produced products. TGSB also promotes standardization, conformity assessment and metrology in the fields of industry and commerce to support industrial efficiency and development. In addition, the agency disseminates and promotes standards for public welfare, health and safety.
The Gambia Standards Bureau offers the following services:
- standards development and sales
- inspection, Testing and Certification
- standards Information Centre
- calibration of measurement devices/equipment
- training
TGSB is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC).
Conformity Assessment
The Gambia Standards Bureau offers conformity assessment procedures such as testing, inspection and certification. In addition, TGSB helps organizations to get certification standards, including ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
Product Certification
The Gambia maintains import certification provisions regarding food products, in connection with health and sanitary provisions of the Food Act 2005.
All imports of animals, marine life, plants, their products, and processed foods of plant or animal origin, must be accompanied by an import certificate issued in accordance with Codex Alimentarius quality control requirements.
No food item may be imported into the Gambia without:
- a certificate from the manufacturer that it was manufactured in accordance with an existing standard or code of conduct pertaining to the product
- if such standard or code does not exist, any international standard laid down by the Codex Alimentarius Commission are accepted
- a certificate issued by the government of the exporting country that its sale in that country would not contravene the law.
Imports of cereals, pulses or legumes, including rice, require phytosanitary certificates issued by the national plant protection service of the country of origin, and fumigation certificates issued by the exporting company or an approved company.
