What is Plaster or Paris?
Plaster of Paris is alpha gypsum plaster also known as high strength gypsum.
What is the difference between Plaster of Paris and building gypsum (beta gypsum)?
Alpha Gypsum is obtained by heating of gypsum stone under high pressure. Though both have the same chemical composition (CaSO4.1 / 2H2O), they differ in their crystallographic structures. In Beta plaster, crystals are needle-like and amorphous shaped, but in Alpha plaster they have a much more refined and geometrical shape. This structure of alpha gypsum crystals allows to obtain a low water demand, which subsequently leads to formation of less internal pores in products and it becomes more durable.
