Description
The winemaking history of the Caruso family dates back to the early 1970s, when the grandfather, Filippo Caruso, began to cultivate the first vineyards in Nicolosi on the slopes of the Etna volcano, for the production of wine for family use. The experience gained over the years has been handed down to his children, of which Antonio in particular, in 1994 decided to buy the first family vineyard, continuing the work started by his father with dedication and stubbornness. The same passion and experience is now transmitted and shared with his son Fabio (ONAV taster and graduate in Agriculture with a specialization in viticulture), with whom they decide, in 2017, to start bottling the wines produced on the farm for the first time. , in order to improve and enhance the quality of the wines that the Etna area is able to offer. The Caruso company currently produces Etna Doc wines only and exclusively from grapes of its own production, paying close attention to the quality of the wines to be produced, thanks also to the very small size of the company vineyards, where every detail is taken care of with the utmost dedication directly by the family Caruso, from the vineyard to the bottle. The territory and the vineyards A peculiar characteristic of the Caruso vineyards is the recently formed volcanic soil (from the eruption of the Monti Rossi di Nicolosi in 1669), consisting mainly of black sand, pumice (very porous and light volcanic rock) and volcanic ash containing high concentrations of minerals and nutrients such as iron, copper, potassium and magnesium, ideal for a perfect ripening of Nerello mascalese and cappuccino and white Carricante, Carricante and Inzolia, giving first the grapes and then the wines, those unique organoleptic characteristics that only the Etna manages to give. The vineyards, located on the southern slope of Etna in the territory of Nicolosi (CT) at 850 m asl, are trained with spurred cordon and carefully cultivated directly by the Caruso family. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand after a careful selection of the best bunches. The hot sun and the arid and dry summers of Sicily complete the perfect ripening process of the grapes, thus allowing the production of ETNA DOC wines characterized by absolutely unique and inimitable flavors and aromas.
