The Studebaker Avanti is a personal luxury coupe manufactured and marketed by Studebaker Corporation between June 1962 and December 1963. Exactly half a century ago at the Auto Show in New York, the debut of Studebaker Avanti took place. Avanti cost as much as the most popular Ford Thunderbird, and even more expensive than the Chevrolet Corvette and Buick Riviera! The engines of Studebaker Avanti offered five modifications of the 4.7-liter R1 from the Hawk predecessor model: 240, 280, 290, 335 (Paxton) and 575 (Bendix) horsepower (the last modification in the series did not go). There were also such technical devices as front disc brakes (for the first time in the USA they appeared on Avanti) and attempts to improve safety: a rigid arc in the fiberglass roof of the body (which was supposed to protect the passengers when the car is turned) and a soft upholstery of the interior parts of the cabin.
